Established in 1906

Kalene Mission Hospital was established in 1906 by pioneer missionary surgeon Dr Walter Fisher. It has served the Lunda people in the remote northwest corner of Zambia, near the border with Angola and the Congo, and has been a referral center for a number of smaller facilities.

Today

The hospital has about 150 beds and provides medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetric care. There are now about 1,000 deliveries per year. There is also a large outpatient department. Support services include laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and physiotherapy.

In recent years there have usually been three doctors on staff. Surgical, orthopaedic, and gynaecological consultants are available part of the time.

Kalene Nursing School is associated with the hospital, and graduates find employment at Kalene and beyond.

Project Funding Needed

While the Zambian government supports the hospital by paying staff, and providing some medicines, capital projects require outside funding. Kalene Advancement, Inc is helping to meet that need.
